Storyline

A couple aged between 22 and 24 are married and live in their own house together, they have their first child that was a girl, unfortunatly thier daughter died when she was only five months old. The death of her first child make the mother turn into a psychopath due to the stress and grief the death has caused her.

Therefore, by using the fathers help the mother kidnaps a 11-year old girl and makes her live under the staircase so she cannot escape. The mother does this as she thinnks that the 11 year old girl might be her daughter.

A seven year gap is shown in the film as now the girl they kidnapped is 18 years old and the girl they kidnapped realises there is a ghost in the house. This ghost turns is the couple first child who would now be seven years old.

The ghost is evil because it does not like another girl living in her house and feels as though the 18 year old girl is taking her place. One day, the parents go to work while the girl is threatened to stay at home. The door of the house is left home, so the girl sees this as an escape route becuase the ghost wants to kill her and she can't stay under the stairs forever however, as she decides to escape she ends up bumping into the mother on the way.

The girl tells the father there is a ghost in the house. Towards the end of the film the ghost is detected and the mother realises the actions she took were wrong.

New Storyline

A couple living together in their late 20s have just had a baby girl however, the father already has a 12 year old daughter. After the child birth the mother gets post natal depression. As the baby keeps crying the mother gets stressed and kills the baby. After killing the baby the mother becomes a psychopath and the father thinks the death of the baby is down to a cot death.

Unknowingly the mother acts strangely and does scary things around the house that she is not aware of she is a psychopath, this convinces the daughter and father that there is a ghost in the house. The daughter sees the mother doing something strange in the kitchen through the key hole. In the shot the mother stares back at the girl (looks evil). Many different scenes can be shown to show that there is something wrong with the mother/house.

At the end the mother tires to attack the daughter however the father comes and tries to stop her, as she pushes him out the way he finds it hard to stop her so he hits her on the head and she does (this was not deliberate). The father and daughter move house and live together.

Poster Research

The genre for this insidious poster is horror. However, as it is a poster not much information will be presented as a poster is only meant to attract the audiences attention and the targeted audience will not have that much time to stand and read, as they would have a magazine to do this. As you can see on this poster only the main image, films title and other text is presented.

The main image on the poster is of the main character this image is taking up the whole of the poster and the little boy is looking directly at the audience also the little boys eyes stand out as they are of a much brighter colour than the rest of his face. This attracts the audience's attention and gives the audience an insight to what the film might be about because as we can see the little boy looks troubled and frightened. Also, the text in the boys eyes 'insidious is' tells us that the demon/ghost is inside the boy which is making him behave in a abnromal manner and become posessed. The boy is also wearing his night clothes, this makes the audience view him and vulnerable and inncocent as he may not know himself that there is a ghost/demion inside him. The colour of the boys nighty is red this represents danger and death.

In the main image the background is of a house although it may look like a normal family home it has a mysterious and haunted look to it, which could indiacte that the house may cause bad things to happen. Also, in the sky its very cloudy and dark this makes it more scary and it gives us the impression that something bad might happen as darkness usually creates tention.

On the poster we can see all the other scary films that were produced by the name director as Insidious and they are Paranomal Activity, Saw etc. As these two films were sucessful and gained many viewers and their targeted audience enjoyed watching them, by placing the film names onto the Incidious poster it will attract more people to watch it as they would expect to be scared just as the previous films.

Also, the quote on the poster, 'Its not the house that haunted', this emphasies more that the boy is the one who is possesed and creating the problem. Also, the title 'Incidious' is palced vertcially across the little boy's body this emphasies more that the boy has the demon inside him. Also, the words 'is' are in red this tells us that the demon that is insdie him is quite dnagerous.

The genre for Scream 4 is horror. The poster gives the audience an insight to what the film may be about by including images, names of the charcaters, the name of the film, who the film is by and a quote. The background of the poster is simple as its plain balck, this creates a mysterious atmosphere and ghostly effect. This also allows the text and the characters to stand out more againist the black backgorund. Also, the colours red and white have been used which makes the poster look more appealing to its targetted audience. Also, as the title is in the centre of the poster it is more likely to be the first thing the audience.

Also, as the background is black this creates more emphasis on the main image of the mask which then turns into a knife at the bottom. This allows the main image to standout and attract the targetted audience attention more easily as the knife almost has a glow on it that emphasises how sharp it is. Also, the mask itself is also glowing this creates a ghostly effect. This tells us that the main weapon in the film in the knife which is used to kill everyone also as there is only one mask it creates emphasis that if one 'person' can create so much damage then the film will be worth watching as this person is dangerous and will make the film more exciting and enjoyable to watch. Also, the actual main image is shown from a side view point, this indicates that the audience will only be able to work out parts of the films stroyline from the poster.

Some of the main characters are shown at the bottom of the poster that are poisitioned in a V shape, by doing this it enables use to see who the main characters in the film are. We can also see the characters facial expressions, this allows us to see what thier personality might be like.

The film's name is positioned in the centre of the poster covering some of the image of the mask near the mouth. The name is written in white however, the number four is in red, such as 'Scre4m'. Above the film name it is stated who the film is by, " A film by Wes Craven". By doing this it will gain the film more viewers as Wes Craven would have made many films previously and if the targetted audience enjoyed them, they would enjoy Scre4m too.

We also learn that Scream 4 is part of a sequeal as the A has been replaced with the 4, this may also give the impression that the more films they release the scarier they will be and as this is part four, this will attract the targeted audience more as they would expect to be more scared.

Across the top of the poster three main characters name are mentioned, their first names are shown in small letters and are white whereas, their surname's are shown in red but the font is bigger. This would also attracted the target audiences attention becuase if they are familiar with some of the main characters and liked their acting in previous films they are most likely to enjoy this film too.

At the bottom of the poster there is a quote that states, 'New Decade, New Rules'. The frist two words and in red and the second two words are in white. 'New Rules' implies that new methods will be used inorder to kill the characters and the unexpected will occur. This would make the audience want to watch the moive more as they would be eager to know what happens. 'New Decade', suggests that something different is going to happen in the film.

Magazine Research

The genre for this magazine is horror and the certificate for this film is 15. This makes it relevant to our film as our targeted audience is 15 and this will help us when producing our magazine as we will know the conventions used to attract people from this age range of 15+. The main image on the magazine is of the actual killer in the film, this makes the magazine cover more mysterious. The mask is placed directly in the centre of the page and looking directly at us, this grabs the audiences attention instantly, as it creates eye-contact. The title of the film is also in the centre of the magazine however, it is placed over the image of the killer, this suggests that the action taking place is in the word as the mouth of the mask is open so it actually suggests that the mask is screaming. We also learn that the film is from a sequel as the number four has been replaced with an A.

The conventions of this magazine front cover are that it includes a masthead, straplines, pug and kicker. The font choice of the masthead is bold and simple this makes it easier for the audience for familiarise them self with the magazine.  Also, the masthead, "review", takes up the full length of the magazine so it will be easier for the audience to remember and because its bold it will most likely to be the first text they will see, which makes the magazine more eye-catching.

The strap lines are all in different fonts, by doing this it makes the magazine seem more appealing, such as 'splash hits' looks as if it has been written in blood this has a positive effect as when blood runs it usually goes in lots of directions just like the text on the magazine, this makes the magazine look more gruesome and suggests death. This would attract the targeted audience as they would be interested to find out more information based on the horror stories. As the text used gives the targeted audience an insight of what the stories include might be based on.

Also, other strap lines such as 'We went through hell together', this text is more simple as the caption is more serious this suggests that the story may be based on a real-life scernio, this would also attract the targeted audience as they would find out about different horror experiences that have happened to people. This also, relates to the film, as Scream 4 also involves young adults experiencing horrfic events which then cause thier death.

The kicker does across the top of the magazine which says, '131 Reviews ! UK's Biggest Film and TV Guide'. By doing this is advertise's the magazine and it will gain more viewers for the film. The first part '131 Reviews' is in yellow and on a red backgorund which makes it more outstanding for the targeted audience. This tells us that it is important that the magazine contains 131 reviews. The second part 'The UK's biggest film and TV guide', is written in white on a red backgorund. This also shows how important this fact is to attract the viewers attention and it emphasieses the popularirty of the magazine.

The pug on the magazine is shown on the top heft hand side and it says, 'Slasher Special! 20 Gore Soaked Pages Featuring..' This would attract the targeted audience becuase it meantions that there are special features in the magaizne. Also, using the colours yellow, white and red in different places on the magazine will attract the audiences attention more easily.
The main colours on the magazine are black, white, red and yellow. The colours red and yellow are bright and black and white are dull colours. Also, the colour red suggests murder, blood and danger, this gives an insight to the audience that the film will involve death. Also, black creates a mysterious mood and with darkness bad things occur, also when its dark no-one knows whats going to happen next this creates suspence and attracts the audiences attention more. Also, the colour white can mean many things however, when associated with a horror film the colour white to suggest no emotions because Scream 4 is so scary after watching it the targeted audience would be speachless. However, by using the colour yellow it adds more brightness onto the magazine and highlights the extra's on the magazine, this could also suggest that in the film Scream 4 not all the events that take place are scary there are some happy scenes as the colour yellow symbolises happiness.

The genre for this magazine is horror. The main colours used on this magazine are red, white, blue and black. The masthead of the magazine is in a simple font which makes it stand out aganist the other text, also having a shade of black as a shadow creates more emphasis on the title. The name of the magazine 'Goreszone', stand out itself as the name suggests that the magazine will include many scary images and gory writing, this would attract the audiences as they would expect this from a horror magazine.

The main image on the maagzine has been made to look like a grewsome character. This would relate to our stroyline as the mother in our film turns into a psychopath due to her daughters death and the woman on this front cover could have harmed herself. She looks like a grewsomke character, due to her blood sumdges on her skin and clothes, this could either suggest she attacked herself or a creature did. Also, as the model is looking directly at us and we get to see her full face this engages the adiences attention more and they will most likely buy the magazine. Also, the way in which the model is staring gives a scary feel to the magazine.

The strap lines on the magazine include the actors names, they are in bold red colour and the font used it quite big. However, the actos name of the woman is in a much bigger font compared to the others, this is to show her importance and promote who she is. Also, underneath the actors name in a light blue colour a description of the movie is included, this stands out as the text is in a bright colour.

Researching into Target Audience

Our target audience for our thriller trailer is certificate 15 -25+ aiming at both genre's male and female. This would increase the viewers for our film because horror trailers usually engage more viewers attention as the idea of being scared gives viewers a buzz.

Also, people within this age range usually like to spend thier free time going out with friends and catching up on any events that have taken place throughout the week. Also, they like to have a good time as it gives them time to get away from their studies. Also, teenagers usually go to watch films that are related to their age range and they could relate themselves more easily to the movie. Also, fifteen is a good age to watch a horror movie as they are most likely to understand the narrative and will not be as scared whilst watching the movie. This has a positive aspect as we are teenagers ourselves so we can also relate to the trailer, so we will know what kind of conventions usually engage teenagers, so we can include them in our trailer.

Also, your targetted audience usually do not run a household meaning, although people aged 25 may live alone they would not have to pay any major bills. This means that people within this range will have more money to spare to use on social events and entertainment. Also, people within this age range are less likely to have the responsibility of children which allows them to spend more time enjoying themselves.

Also, the entertainment of watching a horror movie will allow teenagers and young adults to enjoy and give them something to talk about when they go back to college and university. They will most likely pass messages onto their peers and this will attract more people to watch the actual film by engaging into the trailer.

Our research came from other movie trailers such as:

  • Paranormal Activity
  • Orphan
  • Insidious
  • Scream
Majority of the main characters are in their late teens and early adulthood, this would relate to our target audience as our certificate is 15-25+,  so by watching the trailer this would be more realistic for them.

Final Destination 5

The movie final destination 5 has a certificate 15. Also, the film has the genre thriller/horror, in the film the main characters are young people aged between 19- 22+. This relates to our film trailer because our storyline consists of young adults as in our film trailer a girl has been kidnapped at the age of 11 and in the actual film there would be a 7 year gap and in the majority of the trailer she would be 18 years old.  Who has been forced to live in a family with two other children.

The Woman In Black

The 'Woman in Black' has not yet been released as it is a umcoming film for 2012, the genre for this film is thriller. As this film has not yet been released by researching it enables us as an audience to get a clearer idea of what conventions a movie trailer is likely to have. The 'Woman in black' is also the same genre as our trailer we are going to produce therefore it will help us alot.

Setting - The main setting of the movie shown in the trailer is of an old house and inside there are many of antique objects and looks as thought no-one has lived there for years. We also see a small village which seems to be quite poverty-stricken. An old beach is also shown and there is a lot of col, wet weather which creates a mysterious atmosphere.

Sound/dialougue - In the trialer there is a young girls voice over giving the narrative when the trailer first starts, she sounds quite calm and mysterious. As the trialer continues to run we can hear circus music, ticking off a clock, old toys moving and the sudden sound of thudding and wind. This could give us the impression that soemthing is not right in the house.

Characters - Within the trialer there is one main character who is a man that lives in the abandoned house. Also, three young girls are also shown in the trailer and some of the people who live in the village who also seem quite afriad and the can slightly see the 'Woman in Black' towards the end of the trailer.

Props - The props that have been used in the trailer are things such as old toys that look as if they have not been played with for years. There is also a cross in the middle of the beach when the trialer focuses on the sea this could suggest that someone may have died there.

Incidious

The narrative of Insidious trailer consits of a nulcear family. During his childhood the father in the film when he used to be sleeping his soul would communicate with the dead, this also starts to happen to his sin. When the soul communicates with the dead it used to interact with bad spirts, such as the demon and if the demon was to take over the little boys boday then he would die. In the film, the boy goes into a coma however, this is what the rest of the family assume however, in fact the the boy is not in a coma his soul is lost. The father then tries to help his son get rid of the demon however, he fails to do this as the demon ends up killing the father however, at the end his son manages to survive.
The genre for this film is horror.

From only watching the trailer we learn that its a nuclear family and something is wrong with their son and the parents are concerned but they don't actually know whats wrong with him. Once the parents figure this out they then try to work out what the problem is by calling specialists into their home.
From one single shot as the audience we learn alot for example, one long shot us used and we can see the boy lying on the floor in what they think is a coma and a white sheet with red handprints on it. The red handprint is too large to be the little boys therefore we acknowledge that another creature is after him.
In this trailer no voice over is used.

The narrative order of shots in the trailer is not the same as the shots used in the film. As the middle section of the film comes during the beginning of the trailer as this is when the parents are trying to find out whats wrong with thier son. The beginning of the movie is shown during the middle of the trailer. This is when the mother realsies that there is actually something wrong with either thier house or their son.

72 shots are used in the trailer.

Within the trailer, fast pace editing is used, by doing this it bulids up more tention throughtout the trailer and creates suspence on whether the demon is actuallt in the house or inside the little boy.

In the trailer blank, back screens occur which continue to repeat the title 'incidious'. This could suggest that how the father in the film had the demon inside him, he then passed it down to his son so the demon has carried down through generations. This is the same as the title as it continues to re-occur.

The sountrack is of a thudding sound and this builds up tention throughout the trailer. Also, the cound of clock and screeching is also used within the trialer. The sound of the clock ticking could suggest that the parents and the specialists may not have enough time to sabe the little boy.

The specific camera shots that are used are mainly mid shots and close-ups.The mid-shots give a clearer image of the setting. Close-ups show tenion, stress and it also creates a dramatic effect throught the trailer.

Orphan

The naarative of Orphan trailer consists of a nuclear family and the parents decide to adopt another young girl. They then go to an orphange and the parents seemed to be very fond of a little girl called Esther and they decide thats who they want to adopt. However, when they take Esther home the family realise that she is finding it hard to adapt and theres something wrong with her. However, we then find out that Esther is in fact a 30-year old woman in a childs body who tries to sexually seduce thefather and tries to kill the rest of the family, especially the mother. Esther's plan backfries as at the film of the film the father and Esther both die and the rest of the family survies. The genre for the film is horror/thriller.

From only watching the trailer we learn that the couple want to adopt another child, they bring Esther home however she beings to have trantrums and acts abnormal and they realise that theres something wrong with her as Esther's aim is to try and ruin the family by trying to kill them espect for the father. This is achieved by the dialogue used in the trailer for example when Esther says 'I love you daddy' and 'I have a suprise for you mummy'. For an orphan we would expect Esther to be more attached to the mother however, this is not the case as she tries to bring herself closer with the father and some people may view this as abit strange. Also, by Esther using words such as 'daddy' and 'mummy' try to present her to be quite innocent and child-like this is ironic as she is infact a 30-year old woman.
During the beginning of the trailer there are more mid-shots as everything is calm however, there are more close-ups when Esther tires to kill the family, by having close-ups it creates more effect and many jump shots are also included. However, no voice over is used.

The narrative order of the shots in the same order as it happens in the film.

In the trailer there is a total of 107 shots used.

During the end of the trailer the pace of editing increases becuaase this is when the main events take place and they need more editing to make the trailer look more like a thriller and more likely to scare the audience more.

In the trailer there are no fades or wipes the whole trailr is in colour and runs smoothly usin different shots in different scences however, some black screen transitions are used. The black screens create suspence of what might happen next and it builds up tention and makes the audience more aware.

When the nun who works at the orphange says 'theres something wrong with Esther', the text appears on a white background with black writing, This links to the visuals because in the scence we can visually see that Esther is not acting how a normal child would act as she plans to kill and has many trantrums. This sests up the narrative of the film becuase it relates to the title, the texrt also builds up more suspence as to whats wrong with Esther.

At the beginning of the trailer the music is calm and soothing by using this type of music it creates a happy atmosphere because Esther is being adopted into a loving home. However, now the parents know somethings wrong with her the music is more tense and dramatic Esther starts to act differently to how a normal child may act.

Lastly, at the beginning of the trailer long shots and mid shots are mainly used at the orphange, school, thier house. Then close-up shots are used when Esther begins to chnage and she begins to scream.  Then more close-ups occur when Esther strikes to kill and long shots again to show the effect of this. Also, more close-ups of the families reactions to her behaviour.
